European Marine Energy Centre

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Ltd is the world’s first and leading facility for demonstrating and testing wave and tidal energy converters – technologies that generate electricity by harnessing the power of waves and tidal streams – in the sea. EMEC is also pioneering the development of a green hydrogen economy and smart local energy systems.

EMEC joined forces with PTEC to focus on site development and optimisation activities. The centre will contribute its extensive global experience of consenting, grid connection, operations, performance assessment and the introduction of green hydrogen.

Orbital Marine Power

Innovative Scottish engineering company Orbital Marine Power is helping turn the tide on climate change by commercialising their ground-breaking tidal energy technology that captures renewable energy from the power of the earth’s naturally occurring tidal stream resources.

The company’s O2, the world’s most powerful and advanced tidal turbine, is a 2MW+ product capable of providing utility-scale, clean energy whilst supporting a just transition through the creation of sustainable, quality jobs throughout the project lifecycle. Orbital’s turbines are also ideally suited for integration into future energy systems: low carbon electricity, battery storage and clean fuel solutions, and has multiple applications across tidal streams and rivers.

Orbital Marine Power has secured an option to install 20MW of capacity at PTEC.

Isle of Wight Council

The Isle of Wight Council has always been a strong supporter of renewable energy. From its early investment in tidal in 2012, to its visionary ‘Mission Zero’ – Climate and Environment Strategy.

PTEC could make a significant contribution to 5 of the 6 ‘Net Zero’ outcomes that the Isle of Wight Council is seeking in its ‘Mission Zero’ – Climate and Environment Strategy.

The utilisation of the considerable tidal stream energy available to the South of the Island would significantly increase the capacity of green energy available. When combined with the other sources of renewable energy, it is sufficient to make the island energy independent.
